Is Green the new Red?

I hope you're sitting down, because here's a shocker: the GOP is trying to help an unpopular Republican retain his Senate seat through duplicitous means.

I know, I know. When I found out, I nearly fell down too.

It seems that last June, Pennsylvania Green Party Senate candidate Carl Romanelli received $66,000 in campaign contributions that afforded him the ability to hire a signature-gathering firm to get his name on the state's ballot. But what does a third-party candidate have to do with evil Republican's, you ask?

…The 20 generous supporters who funded Romanelli's signature-gathering effort weren't part of the Green Party. Instead, they were Republicans. According to the Associated Press, nearly all of them have a record of donating to Republican candidates, and many of them have already given to Rick Santorum, the incumbent GOP senator.

OK, that's weird. Why would Republicans give to a candidate ostensibly running against their guy? Apparently, Keystone State GOPers have been reading Sun Tzu, because they've realized that their enemy's enemy is their friend.

You see, Green Party candidates often siphon some of the more liberal voters away from moderate Democrats, and candidate and Bob Casey isn't exactly the most liberal of liberals. Though not Lieberman-like in his foreign policy, Casey shares Santorum's opposition to abortion rights.

It is easy to envision fiercely pro-choice Pennsylvanian Democrats having difficulty casting their votes for Casey. Whether these uber-liberals choose Romanelli or simply stay home on Election Day, Santorum gets a gets a lift. Frankly, the smartest thing Senator Man/Dog Sex can do is make abortion the central issue of his campaign – a tactic that would fracture the left, galvanize the right and ensure six more years of, well, this website says it best.
